Overview of Our Leagues

TRAINING LEAGUE (Tee-Ball)

Ages 4-6 (age as of 4/30. Must turn 4 by 12/31/2023)

$85 Registration Fee

Training League Vice President – Brendon Moore brendon.moore@icloud.com

  • Focus in the Training League will be on developing basic baseball skills and knowledge while using softer baseballs.  This division utilizes a mixture of T-ball and coach pitch, depending on the skill level of each individual player.
  • Time commitment consists of one practice per week on a weekday and one game each weekend (typically Saturday).  There may be an occasional Sunday game.  The season runs from late-April until early June.

THE WHYBL DIFFERENCE

  • Players will be assigned teams utilizing school assignments and friend requests.  We will do our best to accommodate all requests.
  • Players will receive a game jersey and hat they can keep.
  • The season will conclude with our annual Jamboree, a player favorite!  Kids will come together as a league, each wearing their team gear and participating in fun games and events centered around baseball skills they have learned throughout the season.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE (Machine-Pitch)

Ages 7 and 8 (age as of 4/30)

$105 Registration Fee

Instructional League Vice President – Eric Burns eburns3434@yahoo.com

  • Instructional League is machine pitch using regular baseballs.
  • Focus is on having fun and teaching basic baseball fundamentals, rules, sportsmanship and teamwork.
  • Time commitment consists of 1 practice per week in April. After the season starts in May, there will be 1 practice on weekdays and 2 games on weekends. All teams will finish the season with a year-end playoff tournament.
  • Players are introduced to real games and scorekeeping, but WHYBL allows for coaches to be on the field for real-time instruction during games.
  • Six-inning games.  All kids must bat throughout the games (referred to as a continuous batting order) and play a minimum of 4 innings in the field.  There are 10 defensive players in this division.

THE WHYBL DIFFERENCE

  • A pitching machine (coach operated) is used to provide a safer environment for hitters and pitchers.  The pitching machine  move games along due to the consistency and accuracy of pitches. This format builds confidence in young hitters as there are no walks, fewer strikeouts, and more balls hit in play (more action for defense too!). With a pitching machine, there is minimal chance a batter will be hit, keeps “pitchers” at a safer distance, minimizes wear on young pitching arms, etc.
  • Players will be assigned to teams utilizing school and friend requests.  Please note friend requests on registration.  We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but our goal is to balance the skill level on all teams as much as possible.
  • Players will have access to FREE preseason clinics held in our own indoor baseball center.
  • Players will receive a game jersey and hat they can keep.
  • Coaches are Ripken Certified and trained on player safety.

MINOR LEAGUE (Kid Pitch)

Mostly 9 and 10 year-olds (age as of 4/30)

$125 Registration Fee

Minor League Vice President: Patrick Sharkey bluessharkey@gmail.com

  • Focus is on more in-depth instruction on fundamentals and team play, while allowing for a little more competition.
  • This division offers a 46/60 (a pitcher's mound 46 feet from home plate, bases 60 feet apart) baseball diamond size format for younger and/or still developing players.
  • Six-inning games. Players must bat throughout the games (continuous batting order) and play a minimum of 4 innings in the field.
  • Minor League teams will have 2 practices per week in April, and 1 practice and 2 or 3 games per week in May and June.  All teams will finish the season playing in a year-end playoff  tournament.
  • All Minors players attend a skill assessment which allows balanced teams. All 9 year-olds and most 10 years olds are assigned to this division.  Some 10 year olds and most 11 year-olds are assigned to the Majors division. Limited highly-skilled 8 year-olds are offered the opportunity to play up to this division based on assessment.
  • Friend requests are not accepted in this division.  Teams are assigned based on talent distribution, league age balance, prior season team where possible, school, and coaching distribution.

THE WHYBL DIFFERENCE

  • New teams are built each season in order to best distribute player talent and coaching support, but the league will use the prior season's teams as a starting point when possible. Thus, returning players will most likely know some of their returning teammates.  At the same time, they will also get a chance to play with new teammates.  This promotes diverse relationship building and teamwork concepts for both the players and coaches.
  • All players receive a jersey and hat they can keep.
  • Games are umpired.
  • Players will have access to FREE weekly offseason/preseason indoor clinics and practices held in our own indoor baseball center.

MAJOR LEAGUE (Kid-Pitch, Bigger Diamond)

Mostly 11 and 12 year-olds (age as of 4/30)

$245 Registration Fee

Divisional VP:  Rob Gallo - whyouthbaseball@gmail.com

  • Played on the slightly bigger 50/70 diamond (a pitcher’s mound 50 feet from home plate, bases 70 feet apart) to encourage development (leading, stealing, pickoffs, etc.) and ease the transition to the 60/90 ft. diamond.
  • WHYBL uses a player draft to form Majors teams to ensure parity and avoid "stacking".
  • All 12 year-olds will be assigned to the Majors, unless  requested. Most 11 year-olds will also be assigned to the Majors.  All 10 year-olds will be assessed and the top 16 (2 per Major League team)  will be assigned to Majors.
  • 3 practices per week in April, and then 1 practice and 2 or 3 games per week in May and June.
  • Six-inning games.  All kids must bat throughout the games (continuous batting order) and play a minimum of 4 innings in the field.

THE WHYBL DIFFERENCE

  • Players remain on their drafted team until they graduate from the division to form lasting relationships with players, families and coaches.
  • All teams will finish the season by playing in a year-end Majors playoff tournament.
  • All players will have access to FREE offseason/preseason indoor clinics and practices (circumstances permitting) held in our own indoor baseball center.
  • Games umpired by certified umpires.
  • All players will receive a jersey and hat they can keep.
  • All 12 year-olds receive an opportunity to play in the All Star Weekend Skills Competition.
